This invention essentially relates to the use of a 4-carbamoylmethyl-4-phenyl-2-pyrrolidone as an anti-ischemic agent whose hypotensive and cognition-enhancing activity has been previously described. It has been shown that the anti-ischemic activity was higher than that of obsidan. However, unlike the latter, the agent of the present invention has no negative inotropic activity.
